Christ the Redeemer

Today we talk about Christ the Redeemer, the massive statue that from Corcovado Mountain overlooking Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. Made of concrete and soapstone, has been raised since 1922. The majority of critics argues that it is the representation of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ who offered his death in exchange for our life gets rid of sin.

Others reject this hypothesis stating that the opening of the arms representing not crucified, but rather a gesture of openness towards men.

Criptic’art We believe that the first hypothesis is true only in part while the second does not seem reliable. Why Jesus, after all the evil that we, the humanity, have done despite his sacrifice, he should embrace us?

So what is he doing up there?

The answer seems to get there from another sculpture, far away from here, but we believe in double halo linked to Jesus of Rio. We are talking about the Christ of the Abyss. Bronze statue of 1954 lies on the seabed of San Fruttuoso in Liguria, Italy.

Represents Christ, with outstretched hands in the air. For some symbolizes human deafness to God’s appeals muffled by the water barrier. Instead, we think that it represents a later stage of the same Christ the Redeemer, after the plunge. And we explain. The open hands of the first Christ there are perhaps thinking of a dip that Christ is about to accomplish?

And the second Christ seems to be invoking something?

2015 years ago his symbolic gesture was not understood. We believe that in this representation Jesus dies for the second time. Then decides to test us and calls to be pulled up, because saving him, we can save our soul.

The two Crists are the same entity. Here Jesus exceeds the sculptural art to enter the magic of movement, telling a story.

We, Criptic’art, that of artistic interpretation we made our life, we believe deeply in this version and turn a prayer to the municipality of San Fruttuoso: save the statue from the sea! Save this Jesus, who because of us no longer able to walk on water, perhaps weighed down by our sins.

More evidence? The Christ of Rio was started in 1922, the Christ of the Abyss was finished in 1954. It ‘a dive that required a reflection of 32 years of time. In his previous sacrifice Christ had died at 33 years. A fortuity? We believe that Christ represented here, not happy with our response after his sacrifice in the year zero, they try another. Waits 32 years from his second “resurrection”, and then, the plunge.

But why did not wait the traditional 33 years? To find out, we interviewed a former hunter mussels Finnish, Ms. Heikkilä a Ȁrƫra.

You’re probably wondering why the second Christ is not laid on the seabed of Rio. Simple. Jesus wanted his message to arrive to the whole world, not just to Brazilians. Our experienced geologists have measured the distance between San Fruttuoso and Rio and have found that it is almost equal to the diameter of the Earth. A discovery that even further corroborates our theory. Jesus needed a symbolic distance. A dip in Rio and finished strong in the waters of Liguria. A Christ who wants to prove that despite the infirmities did not lose that strength of mind that made him universally popular. He can’t walk on water, but if he concentred himself, he can still make a journey of 12,000 kilometers in flight.

A Christ who despite no longer able to walk on water, is always on top.

A Christ who is still able to multiply things. Mussels, this time.

A Christ who takes a dip long, generous and emblematic, represented in these two, or better, unique masterpiece.

Resurrect twice! It seems that for him is a passion, if you permit us the joke. But basically this is a self-mocking Christ, who reminds us away from the Bill Murray in Groundhog Day, in which the protagonist could not commit suicide.

Hopefully this is the last time.
